Description: Yavesh Gilad (Jabesh Gilead) is a town on the east bank of the Jordan River which plays an important role in Sefer Shmuel (The Book of Samuel.) The residents of Yavesh Gilad are allied strongly with the tribe of Binyamin (Benjamin), and Shaul (Saul,) the first king of Israel, has a great deal of support. When Shaul is killed by the Phillistines and his body brought to Beit Shean to be put on humiliating display, the commandos of Yavesh Gilad undertake a daring mission to rescue his body and bury it with the respect appropriate for a King of Israel. Shaul’s successor, David, pays the people of Yavesh Gilad honor for having treated Shaul, rival though he be, so respectfully.
