Description: Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu z”l, born in Jerusalem’s Old City, was the scion in the line of prominent kabbalistic rabbis. In 1960 he was elected as a dayan (judge of religious issues,) the youngest ever to take that position, and became Chief Rabbi of Be’er Sheva for four years. He was chief rabbi from 1983 until 1993, and had a major impact in bringing knowledge of Judaism back to secular Israelis who had abandoned it. He was an outspoken leader of the National Religious movement in Israel and a major spiritual proponent of Israel’s settlement movement.
