Description: Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu z”l was from a long line of Yerushalmi (Jerusalemite) Rabbis. Due to his grandfather’s involvement in resistance to the Ottoman Empire, his family was exiled to Baghdad until they were able to return to the Land of Israel. Rabbi Eliyahu completed his studies at the Institute for Rabbis and Religious Judges with high honors, and was the youngest person to be elected as a Dayan (religious judge.) After several years there, he moved on to the Supreme Religious Court of Jerusalem, before being appointed Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel. His penetrating intellect, warmth, kindness, and fierce dedication to Jewish national rights in the Land of Israel gained him the respect of Israelis both secular and religious until his passing in 2010.
