Description: This painting depicts a grove of olive trees in the Shomron (Samaria, north of Jerusalem.) This region is typified by rocky mountains interspursed with flat, fertile valleys. In the valleys, springs and streams feed the local crops, mostly of olives and wheat (two of the seven species of the Land of Israel.) The rocky soil, which prevents most plants from growing, is the favorite soil of the native olive trees. Many of these trees have lived for thousands of years, dating back to the times of the Kingdom of David.
