Description: A soldier approaches the Kotel, the Western (Wailing) Wall, in Jerusalem. The sun, now setting in the West, throws the soldier’s shadow onto the stones, which seems to mix the two elements of human and wall into one. The stones show the Herodian pattern with a chiseled border around their edges, an interesting combination of the exactitude with which the Beit Hamikdash, the Holy Temple, was built juxtaposed against the random grooves and crannies worn into the stone after 2,000 years of wind and rain, and hands and faces pressed into the wall.
