Description: Kever Rachel, the Tomb of the biblical Rachel, stands on the road from Beit Lechem (Bethlehem) to Yerushalayim (Jerusalem.) The site’s location has been known since antiquity, and from time immemorial it has been a site of prayer. It was on this road that the survivors of the destruction of the Beit Hamikdash, the Holy Temple were led away in chains to the Babylonian exile, while the spirit of Rachel stood by the roadside and wept. This painting is based on visits and on historic photographs of the area when it was a pastoral, open space.
